Canadian Heritage: Young Canada Works Deadline is fast approaching (Jan 20th)
Funding support for 4-12 month arts admin / arts practice internships (full or part time)
Just goes to show that there is always something new to learn about grants, even for me…
I have been aware of this (longstanding) Canadian funding program internship funding program for many years, but since all the clients I had who applied for it were museums/heritage groups, I never really delved into the (eligibility) criteria much further. The name of the program doesn’t help much either…since its full name is “Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage” (which, in my defence, might have thrown me off a little ;-) )
As most things happen for me, in looking around for possible sources of funding for a client wanting to hire short-term help, I decided to take another look at this program…and low and behold, I discovered that it isn’t, in fact, just for heritage orgs, but for pretty much ANY arts organization.
This program component covers “Internships in Canada (arts administration and practice, and cultural management)” and is delivered by the Cultural Human Resources Council. As outlined on their website:
Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (YCWBCH), a paid internship program administered to support all cultural occupations (including artists) by the Cultural Human Resources Council. The program is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage as part of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. The internships provide a meaningful work experience for college and university graduates.
CHRC is seeking applications from not-for-profit arts and culture organizations in Digital Media; Film and Broadcasting; Live Performing Arts; Music and Sound Recording; Visuals Arts and Crafts; Writing and Publishing; and Heritage.
YOUNG CANADA WORKS aims to promote skills development, knowledge of Canadian achievements in the cultural sector and cultural heritage, and to enhance the employability of internship participants. The duration of the full-time internships is from 16 to 52 weeks.
Key Things To Know:
Deadline: Friday, January 20, 2023 (midnight EST; 9pm PST).
Internships to take place between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024.
The program supports all cultural occupations (including artists).
Helps unemployed or under-employed college and university graduates to acquire professional skills and experience through career-oriented internships.
The program normally contributes approximately 50% of eligible employment costs (i.e. wages, benefits and other eligible expenditures), and may, if justified, contribute up to 75% of eligible employment costs.
(MA Note: if you’re wondering where the REST of the funding for a position might come from, you can always apply to the BCAC Early Career Development program as well)
The program may contribute a maximum of $15,000 per internship in Canada.
